Ottawa, September 18, 2021 — During the 45th Annual General Meeting held on September 12 in Montebello, QC, Canadian Parents for French announced the election of Mr. Larry Vaters, of Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador to the National Board of Directors

Vaters is the outgoing President on the CPF Newfoundland and Labrador Branch Board of Directors and has long been an advocate for French second language education in his province. A graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland with a B.Comm (co-op) and a B.A (French), he has two school-aged children, both of whom are learning French. He is an education and youth advocate and volunteers in many other capacities, including with school councils, Paradise Soccer Club and the Shallaway Youth Choir.

Following the Annual General Meeting, Mr. Vaters accepted to serve in the role of volunteer Treasurer to the National Board of Directors. He joins re-elected President and Vice President, Derrek Bentley of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Kate Peters, of Edmonton, Alberta, respectively, and returning Directors: Dr. Wendy Carr (BC), Dr. Richard Slevinsky (AB), Diane Tijman (BC), Nancy McKeraghan (ON). Sincere thanks were extended to Marc Gobeil (ON) who completed a two-year term as Director; he will continue being involved in CPF National committees.

The 45th AGM follows the conclusion of the CPF Leader’s Networking Event, from September 9-12, where CPF staff and volunteer leaders participated in education sessions and discussed implementation plans of the CPF Network Strategic Plan 2020-2025. This was the organization’s first in-person event in more than 18 months. It followed all public health measures and was also offered virtually, allowing participation from across the CPF national Network.

“We are thrilled with the way the organization has thrived and advanced in the past year, we have reached more parents and students. We are very grateful for the volunteers that have helped us deliver our programs. The CPF Leader’s Networking Event allowed us to regroup and establish our priorities for the coming year,” said Derrek Bentley, CPF National President.
